Burnt body found on golf course near Brighton
A badly-burnt body with part of a limb missing has been found in undergrowth between the 17th and 18th holes of an East Sussex golf course.
The body was found by players on Saturday morning at Dyke Golf Club just north of Brighton.
Det Ch Insp Trevor Bowles from Sussex Police Major Crime Branch said it had not yet been possible to establish the gender or age of the body.
He said the body remained on site during investigations at the scene.
Missing foot
"We are searching the nearby area for evidence and have spoken to the members of the public who found the body and people working at the course.
"We are at a very early stage of the investigation and I would ask anyone who may be able to help us piece together a picture of what has happened to get in touch," he said.
Mr Bowles said one foot was missing below the shin.
"We will try to determine at post-mortem whether this was before or after death occurred, but the body will remain in situ for the immediate future while our investigations at the scene continue," he said.
Mark Stuart-William, head professional at the club, said the last three holes on the course were closed.
"Most golf is played in the morning and by the time the body was found, most people had already been round the course.
"The road was closed and the police helicopter was whirring overhead for part of the morning," he said.
